Drowsy Driving Prevention Week Dec 6, 2011

A recent poll conducted by the AAA Foundation echoed the results of numerous National Sleep Foundation Polls, namely that a large percentage of Americans report driving under the influence of sleep.   In this latest poll, one-third of those surveyed admitted to driving drowsy in the past 30 days. A 2005 NSF poll of approximately 1,000 people found that 60% of drivers, or about 168 million people, admitted that they had driven while sleepy in the preceding year; and 37% confessed that they had actually fallen asleep behind the wheel.   Studies in the U.S. and Canada show that sleep deprived drivers are 2.5 times more likely to have automobile accidents, while drowsy truck drivers are 3 to 5 times more likely to be in a head-on collision.2

I'm sure most of you know that there are always a lot of auto accidents and trucking accidents around the holidays. If I were to ask you why, you'd probably guess it was because there is always a lot of drinking and driving going on during the holidays. You'd be right, for the most part. Around 39% of all traffic fatalities are alcohol related. But there is another major contributing factor identified in a report from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).  The report from July, 2005, called “Crash Stats”, a ten-year study from 1994 to 2003, analyzed fatal car crashes and how speeding factors into car accidents.  Yes, speeding. Texting While Driving Ban Becomes Law Jul 20, 2011

The laws against distracted driving in Maine were initially passed in 2009.  However, traffic infractions and auto accidents continue to lead to injuries and deaths.  The campaign against distracted driving has led to the passage of a new law by Maine's legislature in June, 2011.  This law becomes effective 90 days from the adjournment of the legislature which occurred on June 29, 2011.  Therefore, as of September 27, 2011 we will have a new law that will allow police officers to stop any drivers seen texting.  The new law imposes a fine of not less than $100 for the first offense, and the fines increase with subsequent infractions of the law.

Portland Attorney Works to Raise Accident Awareness

Portland, MAINE (Sept. 30, 2009) – A recent University of Michigan study has found that the fatality rate per mile driven is highest among U.S. motorists in October, a heavy travel month in Maine as foliage and Columbus Day Weekend lure people onto the roads.
